St. John United Methodist Church was a dream started in 1879 when a large oyster bed was located in the pamlico sound. It took 5 years and many bushels of oysters to fill the sloops and schooners of the buyers form Maryland and Virginia.
In 1885 the dream was realized and the building was on the way.
Today St. John not only feeds the hearts and souls of the community but also the hungry through The Soul Cafe and food panrty located at the church in Avon.
