The Colington Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) was originally incorporated in 1982 as a unit to provide fire protection services to the residents of the Colington Fire District.  Prior to1982, fire department services were provided by the Kitty Hawk Fire Department, which consisted of Colington, Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores and Duck to the Currituck line.

Under the guidance and leadership of Chiefs Gene Ollar (tenure 1982 – 1987) and Rick Heppert (tenure 1987 – 1995) the CVFD developed into a cohesive, hard working unit of dedicated paid and volunteer members.  The year 1995 saw Kim Piddington, formerly Assistant Chief, appointed as the third Chief of the CVFD and its first full time Fire Chief.  Chief Piddington has initiated many comprehensive changes in the department while continuing the department’s tradition of helping others.

An important adjunct to the CVFD is our support group.  The Support Group is active in providing all types of support services to our department.

The CVFD is a non-profit corporation organized under the general laws of the State of North Carolina and Dare County to provide public fire protection.  This corporation is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of five volunteer members of this department elected by their peers.
